Week 8 Study Commandments 7 & 8
Week 8: Ten Commandments Study, #7, & #8
"You shall not commit adultery.” Exodus 20:14 AMP
In this study we will look at the seventh and eighth commandments,
we’ll examine the text to provide some additional insight.
With the seventh commandment
Yah is commanding us not to commit adultery. Let’s look at the dictionary
definition for adultery to gain some clarity. The Oxford Dictionary defines
adultery as voluntary sexual intercourse between a married person and a person
who is not his or her spouse, while this is also the biblical definition of
adultery let’s reference another piece of text where Yahusha (Jesus) speaks on the
matter.
Matthew 5:27,28: “You
have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery’; but I say to you
that everyone who [so much as] looks at a woman with lust for her has already
committed adultery with her in his heart.
Here Yahusha specifics that not only committing adultery is prohibited
but also any lustful, sexually impure acts are included as well. Things like
pornography, masturbation and sex outside of marriage (fornication) are examples
of this.
Commandment eight,
“You shall not steal [secretly, openly,
fraudulently, or through carelessness].
Exodus 20:15 AMP
This is pretty straight forward right but again the
Amplified translation adds additional context were we see that fraudulently
activity** is being included.
**A few examples can
include lying on your taxes to get a larger refund or seeing someone drop money
on the ground and picking it up but not offering it back to them, both are
forms of stealing.
